San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback is getting comparisons to Patrick Mahomes in training camp.

Training camp is officially underway for all 32 NFL teams, and all eyes are understandably on the rookie quarterbacks selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Perhaps the signal caller with the most intrigue was Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers, whom the team traded up to select with the third overall pick. But just how is he doing so far in training camp?

Responding to a Twitter user about what he has heard about Lance at training camp so far, Benjamin Allbright of KOA Colorado said he had someone there tell him, “Mahomes 2.0.”

Lance went viral on Tuesday for making a deep, across the body pass for a touchdown during team practice. You can watch the throw in the video below, courtesy of the 49ers’ official Twitter account.

The 49ers traded up to the No. 3 pick of the NFL Draft to select a quarterback for the foreseeable future, even though Jimmy Garoppolo is on the roster. With the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets virtually locked in to select Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson, respectively, all eyes were on the 49ers, who played coy throughout the pre-draft process.

Despite all the rumors and repots linking the 49ers to Alabama’s Mac Jones, the team fooled everyone by selecting Lance, who many called the quarterback prospect with the most potential out of everyone in the 2021 class.

In his first full season as starter for North Dakota State in 2019, Lance completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns and zero interceptions, while rushing for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns on 169 carries. Lance played in one showcase game in 2020, where he completed 15-of-30 throws for 149 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, all while rushing for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

While Lance does have the stuff to be a great signal caller in the NFL, the 49ers are heavily expected to start Garoppolo under center for Week 1 of the upcoming season. It is wise of them to not throw Lance onto the field before he is 100 percent ready. But when he does officially receive the keys to San Francisco’s offense, football fans could be in for a treat.
